Backend Engineer

FleetGlue is building the FactoryOS — a unified automation layer that lets manufacturers deploy and scale robots, machines, and systems in minutes, not months. We’re creating the backbone that connects the physical and digital worlds of manufacturing — and we’re looking for a founding backend engineer to help build it.

You’ll architect the systems that orchestrate automation in real time, handle high-frequency data from robots and PLCs, and power the APIs that define how factories think. This is a chance to help design the core logic of a platform already running in production at leading manufacturers — and to shape how industrial automation will work for the next century.

What You’ll Do

  • Build the nervous system of automation. Develop foundational backend modules for the FactoryOS — from API orchestration to device management, telemetry ingestion, and control systems.
  • Migrate and modernize. Lead the transition of our Python microservices from AWS to Kubernetes, implementing GitOps workflows and ArgoCD for CI/CD.
  • Stream and synchronize. Implement robust data streaming infrastructure (Kafka, ZeroMQ, or ROS) to handle high-frequency industrial telemetry across edge and cloud environments.
  • Design for scale and resilience. Build APIs and backend services that can handle thousands of devices, users, and data streams with low latency and high reliability.
  • Collaborate across the stack. Work closely with frontend, robotics, and data teams to define how factory devices communicate, integrate, and evolve.
  • Shape the architecture. As one of the earliest backend engineers, your design decisions will become the foundation for every future service in the platform.

You Bring

  • Strong Python backend development skills, with experience designing and scaling API-driven systems.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud-to-on-prem migrations using Kubernetes (or a deep desire to learn and own it end-to-end).
  • Understanding of GitOps principles and modern CI/CD workflows.
  • Curiosity about real-world systems — you care how data moves from a robot sensor to a dashboard, and you want to make that movement instant and reliable.

Bonus Points

  • Experience with high-frequency data streaming (Kafka, ZeroMQ, RabbitMQ, or ROS).
  • Multi-cloud experience across AWS, GCP, or Azure.
  • Background in manufacturing, robotics, or industrial IoT systems.
  • Experience in manufacturing environments

Location

  • Full-time position is based in San Francisco
  • Occasional travel will be required to go on-site to manufacturing or logistics customers

What We Offer

  • Ground-floor opportunity in fast growing startup
  • Compensation
  • Hands-on experience with cutting-edge robotics technology
